For this month’s spotlight, we wanted to spice things up a bit and do something a little different… we reached out to the designer behind the brand, Mar & Luna, and asked Melissa to answer some questions about her background, her passion for children’s clothing, and what sets her brand apart from the competition. Take a look at our featured Q&A below:
Q: How did you come up with the concept for Mar & Luna and what's the story behind the name?
A: I partnered with my mother, Flor, to create this line. We wanted to create a collection that allowed little girls to be playful while still looking proper.
Q: What inspires your collections and words would you use to describe a Mar & Luna kid?
A: I like the classic, feminine style of Lilly Pulitzer. Since I live in Palm Beach, Florida, I know it very well. I design with that style in mind, but most importantly, I want mischievous, darling, sassy, and charming little ladies to feel like they can be stylish and silly.
Q: What's a "normal" day like for you?
A: Well, no day has been normal lately. I just had my first baby a few days ago on March 2nd. I live in Palm Beach, my production is in Peru, and sales are in NYC. So on top of designing my next collection and communicating with my team across the world, I have been getting everything together for the arrival of my little boy. Now, it’s a little more about Lucas (the baby of course), but he still lets me work on Mar & Luna during his naps.
Q: What's up next for Mar and Luna?
A: Right now, we are in the middle of selling the Fall-Winter 2015 collection. Our Spring-Summer 2015 collection has some really popular pieces, so we are building on top of that for Spring-Summer 2016, which we are designing now (in between baby feedings).
